Tourists passing through would probably have not noticed anything strange about the Dawson Creek’s Visitor’s Centre on Wednesday, but residents would have noticed some different faces behind the counter.

City councillors were manning the centre to offer advice to tourists, and to remind locals about all the great summer attractions in their own backyard.

“This is where we all get together and celebrate being part of Dawson Creek, ” said Joyce Lee, manager of visitor services of Tourism Dawson Creek. She added that Counselor to Councillor had been going on since 2003.

“City Hall and the employees here (at the visitors centre) all have a great working relationship with each other, and today we’re getting together to celebrate this beautiful city that we have.”

Part of this program, she says, was to invite the residents of Mile 0 City to help them rediscover what attractions there are in their own city.

“We’re inviting the residents here to come see what we’ve got to offer their summer guests,” she said.

“June is Be A Tourist In Your Own Town month, so we’ve kind of rounded up all the activities for everyone.”

Shaely Wilbur and Charlie Parslow were two of the councillors on hand at the centre to participate in the tourism push.

“Tourism Dawson Creek has generously invited us to come and work with their staff today to greet local tourists and give them any information they need,” said Wilbur.

“We’ll be out mingling with the tourists as they come in the centre.”

Parslow said he wanted to participate, “to experience what its like to work in the tourism centre.”

“I’ve spent some time with the visitors today and told them about my favourite spots on the highway and learned where they’re headed and what places they’ve visited in Dawson Creek,” he said.

Parslow said his favourite tourist spots were the Liard Hot Springs and Toad River, which he has conveyed to several tourists who visited the centre that day.

He’s on two committees that hope to encourage tourism in Dawson Creek: the Mile 0 Park Society and the South Peace Historical Society.

“Tourism is important to me because we get to showcase the community and I think we have a great city here,” he said.

“Anything that pushes Dawson Creek to the fore, I’m interested in.”

Dottie Holland, a long distance tourist from Nashville, Tennessee, was at the centre that day.

She and her husband Douglas have both been retired from careers in the medical industry.

They sold their home and most of their possessions and bought an RV to be full time tourists.

They’ve been traveling for the last 12 years in their RV all over North America and they don’t usually stay in the same campground for long, but sometimes that changes.

“If we find a place we like, then we’ll stay there for up to a month,” she said.

“We really liked Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, and one of my favourite places was New York State – they’ve got great campgrounds there.”

She estimates that in their best year, they’ve visited more than a hundred cities in a single year in their RV.

She said she stopped in Dawson Creek that day because, “we’re on our way to Alaska.”

Holland said she’s been in Dawson Creek before and said she likes staying in the city.

“Everyone we’ve talked to here is so friendly and helpful, in fact, that’s what I wrote in the guest book in the visitors centre.”
