Fort St. John’s BC Energy Conference was given a kick-start from the Peace River Regional District (PRRD) in the form of a $5,000 grant.

“It’s been our tradition to support the conference for several years now,” said Karen Goodings, chair of the board. “The oil and gas industry is our region’s basic economic generator. The industry is what keeps many of us in the upper bracket in income.”

With many oil and gas company head offices out of town, in places like Alberta and Texas, she said events like this are helpful as they allow the executives to hear the concerns of the local residents.

It’s also a good opportunity for residents to hear about the direction the companies are going.

“This conference will allow us to keep a pulse on what the industry is doing,” she said.

It is also expected to address how First Nations are involved in the oil and gas business.

“This conference will showcase everything going on in the region,” said Trevor Bolin, the chair of the BC Energy Conference Committee, who added that it was Fort St. John’s turn to host the conference. That city shares the hosting duties with Dawson Creek and Fort Nelson.

“This year we’re looking at having the biggest and the baddest event yet. We’ll be showcasing things like mining activity, pipelines, works camps, the Site C dam, fracking, new and innovative ways of exploration and removal of the product.”

He said that the event reflects the needs of the entire region.

“I think we all have a vested interest in the conference,” said Bolin.

“When Fort St. John hosts a conference like this, it benefits Fort Nelson, Taylor, Hudson Hope, Dawson, Chetwynd, and everything in between.”

The decision to approve the grant was made by the board at the June 13 PRRD meeting. It has contributed $5,000 regularly to the event since 2005.
