The MLA for Sylvan Lake has reached her boiling point over a lack of action regarding urgent health care in her riding.

“Having somebody die on the doorsteps of the doctor’s office is a gross disregard for Albertans’ healthcare,” said Kerry Towle, MLA for Sylvan Lake/Innisfail.

Brent Boychuk, 49, died after suffering a heart attack Aug. 18.

His family attempted to find care for him at a Sylvan Lake health care facility.

The doctor’s office was closed at the time and he had died by the time emergency crews arrived.

“For me to listen to such a tragic story like the Boychuck’s, where Brianne’s dad died in her arms, was a really painful reminder of our problem with urgent care here,” she said.

The closest urgent care facility for the Sylvan Lake area is in Red Deer, a good half hour’s drive away.

“With incidents like these, that kind of drive time is completely unacceptable.”

Towle said that Sylvan Lake officials have a plan in place and all that they need now is the cash to put the plan in motion.

“The citizens of Sylvan Lake, the counsel and physicians are all working together to create a system that will work and they have it all in place. All they need now is an approval from the government for funding to allow them to go to work on this,” she said.

Sylvan Lake is in dire need of a dedicated trauma centre; one that stays open 24 hours so that families like the Boychucks need not experience unnecessary tragedy.

“They need a facility to allow them to do lab, x-ray and a trauma area and something that’s open 24 hours.”

Towle said the Regional Health Centre in Red Deer is adequate but is overloaded and its high demand needs to be alleviated by creating a trauma centre in Sylvan Lake.

“This will also alleviate the demand on the regional health centre which we know has great service but its over-capacity,” she said. “You can expect to wait six to eight hours at that facility now.”

Towle said she has requested a meeting with Alberta’s Minister Of Health, Fred Horne, concerning Sylvan Lake’s needs.

“I have requested a meeting the minister of health, but he has not responded yet. He will play a critical role in this project.”

Horne could not be reached for comment.
