A Dawson Creek woman’s story is part of a province-wide ad campaign.

Sandra Bodnar O’Donovan has a very special relationship with White Spot, so when the restaurant announced its 85th anniversary, she contacted them with her story.

In 1975, O’Donovan 18 year-old brother Gordie was involved in a car accident on the road in between Dawson Creek and Pouce Coupe.

When the accident occurred, she said, the closest hospital at the time that could care for him in the paralyzed condition he was in was Vancouver General Hospital.

“During his recovery in Vancouver, we discovered White Spot,” she said.

“He loved the mushroom hamburgers they served there.”

It took him years to recover, and every time they visited him in Vancouver, they found go to a restaurant for a family meal.

“After the accident there was a lot of healing, it was a very hard time,” she said.

She said her younger brother was always in “good humour” with the doctors and the nurses, despite his pain.

O’Donovan’s parents moved out to Vancouver to be closer to him, and eventually they all moved back to Dawson Creek during his final years. He passed away in 1998.

And ever since those days, every time she visits the restaurant in Dawson Creek, she is reminded of him.

“It’s almost like a grateful feeling, and a warm sensation,” she said.

O’Donovan said her brother “had a good life” and he loved to travel.

She said he was given a wheelchair-equipped vehicle and when he was able, he traveled on his own to Mexico, and “all over.”

“Throughout the years he still persevered despite being paralyzed, and he did some things that he probably shouldn’t have, but we’ll never forget Gordie.”

She said that Gordie always had a generous nature about him, and when he saw the need to give money to others he always would.

She added, “Eating there was just that little bit of sunshine for how horrible our lives were at that time.”
