A log cabin will be making a move across town, thanks to the South Peace Historical Society.

It will be relocating from a property north of the city to the Walter Wright Pioneer Village.

“Our biggest problem with the move will be the volunteer support,” said Dan Bastiaansen, president of the society.

The society moved a similar cabin from the same location, approximately 20 kilometers north of Dawson Creek, last October. It cost $4,000 to relocate the building.

“We were able to move the last cabin with minimal cost so we’re hoping we can repeat that for this second cabin move.”

The weight of that cabin was more than 5,500 kilograms, and this second cabin is expected to weigh less.

Bastiaansen said their society would be turning the newly moved and smaller cabin into either a land and surveying office, a newspaper office or a police
station.

The planned date for the cabin’s move has been tentatively set for July 1, although when asked when the precise date would be, the response was, “yesterday.”

At this point, they are still in the research phase of the planned move.

Bastiaansen said the entire effort for the previous move was completed with the help of volunteer support from within the society and the same volunteer support will be needed for the move of the smaller cabin.

“One of our members has agreed to move it,” he said.

“It’s really about people in this community coming together to help out with this move.”

He said their society is almost entirely fronting the cost of moving the small-house-sized structure and since the last move went off without a hitch, they are anticipating the same for the smaller cabin.

Their membership has swelled to over 30 and consists of primarily retirees from the community.
