The Unchaga Hall was in a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious mood on Thursday.

The nonsensical word and catchphrase of the Mary Poppins movie phenomenon was part of the Dawson Creek Secondary School’s South Peace Musical Theatre production put on by the Grades 10, 11, and 12 students.

Directors Debbie Longley and Chelsea Mackay said the collection of popular musicals dubbed “Your Favourites” was put on as a way of compensating for a cancelled music class at the school.

“There was no Musical Theatre 12 and I really felt sorry for my students,” said Longley.

“When they were told of the cancellation of that class, some of the students became very emotional about it,” said Longley, who is the school’s musical theatre, dance, drama and English teacher.

Longley’s dedication was clear as she said she came back to the school during her scheduled maternity leave to volunteer her time to put together this production for the students and the city.

“Chelsea was kind enough to help me out with it,” she said.

Mackay was to be Longley’s replacement during her maternity leave.

Thursday’s performance was played solely for the benefit of the rest of the students of the school, but there will be two public performances – on Friday and Saturday night, at the hall.

The selection of the musicals assembled together was by the choice of both Longley and Mackay.

“Some of the songs the students sang were songs that I’ve wanted to hear for years,” said Longley.

“Whatever we thought was do-able and fun,” said Mackay.

The students performed songs from several popular musicals from Rent, Les Miserables, Hairspray, Mary Poppins, West Side Story, Grease, Chicago, Jekyll and Hyde, and Burlesque.

Cody Fonda, a student in the production, was a spitting image of John Travolta, in his role as Danny Zuko from Grease.

“I love to perform – I’ve always loved to perform ever since I was little,” he said. Fonda also played a chimney sweep in the Mary Poppins part of the musical collection.

He said it was “a little nerve wracking” performing in front of his peers, but was able to control his stress and managed to enjoy his work.

They’ve been practicing the production since March from which they rehearsed during a grueling five-day-a-week class schedule with some extra time on the side.

“It was really time consuming, but it was totally worth it,” he said.

Fonda wants to pursue a career in Broadway musicals or playing music – with perhaps a side job of being a music teacher.

Morgan McGowan played “Sandy” in the Grease part of the performance and did a solo in Rent where she sang “Seasons Of Love.”

She said she feels “pretty excited about” the public performances that will be occurring in the following days.

“My parents are gonna come watch, that’s always a blast,” said McGowan.

Organizers said all the funds collected from ticket sales will go towards the benefit of the Unchaga Hall.
