Calgarians are anticipating a blowout battle between the Stamps and their oldest rivals, the Edmonton Eskimos.

Fans and bar owners across the city spent Sunday prepping for the big event, one of Alberta’s biggest time-honoured traditions.

“The Labour Day Classic always brings us more customers than a usual game day would,” said Sam Jablonka, a partner in the Schanks sports bar empire.

“The battle of Alberta is our oldest and greatest rivalry.”

“I’ll be watching the game from both of our north and south bars in Calgary; north for the first half and at the south for the second half,” he said.

Tony Miotti has been purchasing Stampeders’ season tickets for more than 40 years.

“I’ve been buying season tickets for the Stamps and the Flames for more than 40 years; I’m what you would call a dedicated fan.”

His family will be up bright and early Monday preparing for their traditional tailgate party.

“It’ll be awesome. Especially if other tailgaters show up too.”

Miotti said that the Labour Day Classic is more important than any other game played in the season and losing is not an option.

“This game sets the tone for the rest of the season, so it’s just that much more important,” he said.

“As long as we beat Edmonton in the Labour Day Classic, then that’s all that matters.”

Calgary Police will have a noticeable presence in many outside, high-population areas, including McMahon Stadium.

“We understand the passions that exist with Calgary sports fans and the opportunities to celebrate are difficult for many to ignore,” sad police Insp. Darren Leggatt said.

As a result, we are preparing to monitor the (McMahon) stadium and other areas with a lot of people celebrating.

“The reality is, when people are drinking, sometimes things get out of hand and we are prepared to make sure that their fun doesn’t come at somebody else’s expense.”

Kickoff for the Labour Day Classic will be today at 2:30pm.
