Gas prices have risen dramatically all over the Peace Region, with the average provincial numbers aligning to match, according to GasBuddy.com.

Over the past month, gas prices in B.C. have risen by more than 10 cents per litre and local prices have matched those increases.

In Dawson Creek on April 16, the price of gas overall in B.C. was registered as being 129.3 cents per litre, and as of May 15, the price has skyrocketed to 140.9 cents.

The local cost at press time at most of Dawson’s gas stations were recorded at 136.8 cents per litre.

The same range of price was also reported in Fort St. John, but with a spike to 144.9 cents per litre at both the Petro Canada gas stations on the Alaska Highway and 105th avenue.

In and around Dawson Creek, some paying customers were disgusted with the increase and were vocal in their distaste for such high numbers.

“It’s terrible isn’t it? It’s just nuts.” lamented Brent Haney, who lives in the Dawson area and was fueling up his truck on Wednesday.

As upset as he was about the four week rise, he conceded that the time of year may have played a role in the rise in the price of gas.

Haney said that he feels powerless to do anything about the high cost.

“It’s springtime though, it always rises during this time of year,” he said.

“But what can we do about it?”

Deanna Johnson, a resident of Fort St. John, thinks that the gas companies raise the prices, “because they can.”

She also surmised that the gas prices are high in Energetic City so that gas companies can take advantage of certain types of industry in Fort St. John.

“With the type of industries we have up here, ones that use a lot of heavy vehicle machinery, the gas companies know about that and are taking advantage of their heavy gas usage.”

John Skowronski, Director of The Canadian Fuels Association said the primary issue is the increase in demand for gasoline and diesel that always occurs at this time of the year.

He said that with winter drawing to a close, driving becomes much easier and more enjoyable and demand has reflected that spike in the price of gas.

“The usual price increase we experience in the spring is due to what’s known as the ‘gasoline season’,” said Skowronski.

“Typically at this time of year people are happy that winter is finally over and they tend to experience that extra freedom by driving a little more because the roads have cleared up, ergo, driving becomes easier – and more fun.”

Skowronski said that a second factor in the increase during this time of year is the so-called “planting season” that comes with farmers converging upon their open fields with buckets of seed and the increased gas usage that comes with it.

With the machinery that dots up the prairie landscape, those machines need gas too, although many use diesel, all of that fuel comes from the same refineries.

“The second reason for the gas increase is the economic uplift that happens due to agricultural demands,” he said.

“Of course, those machines are primarily using diesel fuels, but the uplift in price occurs at the creation point at the refineries which affects all fuel price concerns.”

Skowronski mentioned that the price increases being experienced all over B.C. are also being felt in Calgary, where his association is based.

The economic factors that affect B.C. as far as increased springtime driving and the so-called “planting season” also affect major centres too.

“We’ve also seen increases of around seven or eight cents at the pumps here in Calgary as well and all of Western Canada has seen those increases too,” he said.

“It’s not as if anyone is picking on B.C.”
