People living along the Alaska Highway west of the Dawson Creek will have to make sure their alarm clocks have battery backup Friday morning.
BC Hydro is planning a four-hour long power outage in the wee hours of Friday morning – in between the hours of 12 and 4 a.m. – and will affect customers living along the highway from 212 Road to 243 Road.
Bob Gammer, northern community relations manager for BC Hydro, said the outage is necessary because the company will be, “separating two large industrial customers who are currently on the same power circuit.”
Air Liquide, a compressed gas and welding products company, and Louisiana Pacific, a building products company, have been sharing the same power circuit for some time now.
Gammer said that Louisiana Pacific advised BC Hydro ahead of time that they would be ramping up their production.
“Louisiana Pacific advised us that their operations would be starting up again and we came to the conclusion that their production in addition to Air Liquide would overload the circuit,” said Gammer.
BC Hydro decided to separate the two customers as being on the same line would have caused unscheduled power outages in the area – affecting many more customers.
“Louisiana Pacific and Air Liquide both have a fairly large power load on that circuit and they can’t both be on that same circuit because of power overload risks,” said Gammer.
Gammer said that this sort of work is routine and, “switches like this are fairly common.”
He said BC Hydro does not foresee any problems with this switching and they anticipate being finished earlier than the planned 4 a.m. deadline.
BC Hydro could not say how many customers will be affected by the planned outage.
They said any customers who experience any power outages after that planned outage time should call BC Hydro at 1-888-POWERON.
