The onslaught of students going back to school Tuesday will test the city’s school boards that, in spite of new schools, are still in dire need of infrastructure and upgrades, say officials.

The public system will have four new schools opening in Calgary this September to help meet its demand, adding more than 2,000 new students, a 1.4% increase over last year.

But Pat Cochrane, trustee board chairwoman for the Calgary Board of Education, expressed concern about the ‘too little, too late’ approach to Calgary’s educational demands.

“The addition of those new schools will only start to tackle our full demand,” she said.

Cochrane said many more schools are needed in Calgary and almost as many need major work.

“We have submitted to the province a plan for 16 major projects; nine new schools and seven major upgrades to existing schools,” she said.

“For example, Christine Meikle School is in dire need of major upgrades to its facilities and is at the top of the list for major renovation. The outlying areas of Calgary need the new schools the most.”

Total enrollment for Calgary’s public system will be more than 105,000 students this year.

The Calgary Catholic School District has added a new school to their system.

St. Isabella is an elementary/junior high located in the Copperfield district of Calgary to help cope with southeast Calgary’s growing student population.

“Our primary challenge is providing the same level of service, with the addition of more than 900 new students to our system,” said Janet Corsten, a spokeswoman for the Catholic board.

This will bring the total number of students in the CCSD system to more than 47,000.

Meanwhile, police will be closely monitoring motorists as the crush of new and old students return to school.

They have asked for motorists to be cognizant of all children near roads, as their back-to-school excitement may cloud their judgment.

“Most kids will be excited about going back to school and they may not be completely aware of the traffic on the roads around schools and playgrounds,” said Insp. Craig Skelton.

“Because of their age, they’re not always thinking about safety.”
