The heat is on!

Calgary’s summer has been warmer than usual this year, and for a city that’s known for its unpredictable weather, that doesn’t come as a surprise, says Environment Canada.

“Calgary has seen higher than normal temperatures for this summer,” said meteorologist Colin Fong, noting the average temperature in July reached a scorching 24.2 C, well above the monthly average of 22.9 C.

And the mercury doesn’t seem ready to go south anytime soon, with the forecast looking to eclipse the average high for August as well.

“The forecast for August looks like it will beat the average of 22.5 C.”

A scorching Sunday saw Calgary threatening to reach the 30 C mark with a sweltering Heritage Day forecast of 31 C expected for Monday.

The rest of the week will see little relief from the heatwave.

Environment Canada is forecasting highs of ranging between 25 C and 29 C straight through until Saturday, with a small chance of rain on Tuesday.

But despite prompting Calgarians to bolt for the shade, as far as breaking any all-time records, Environment Canada said it’s unlikely but not impossible this summer, as no records have been broken yet.

“Calgary is on track for an above average summer, but not a record breaking summer,” said Fong.

The record temperature on the books for Aug. 5 was set in 1893 at 35 C, while the highest mark on Aug. 6 hit 33.9 C in 1997.

Fong said that for the next three months, Calgary should experience higher than normal temperatures.

“We’ve had a small sample size for August thus far but the forecast the next three months will be on track for average to above average temperatures,” he said.

Calgary EMS Public Education Officer Adam Loria said with the high temperatures, heat exhaustion is an ever-preset danger.

“Heat exhaustion is a serious threat,” he said.

“Everyone should keep themselves properly hydrated throughout the summer months.”

Loria said that if anyone experiences heat cramps, they should call EMS immediately.

“Avoid drinking too much alcohol or caffeinated drinks as they can contribute to de-hydration,” he said.

“It’s easy to want to drink alcohol when you’re enjoying a day in the sun, so all we ask is that you drink responsibly.”
