An army of local humanitarians swarmed upon Dawson Creek this Saturday. Wearing reflective vests, the crowds picked up garbage along the road and engaged in a little community cheer.

Those intrepid volunteers were all part of Dawson Creek’s Annual Community Cleanup event that has occurred in Mile Zero City for several years now.

“It’s an opportunity for various non-profit groups to get out there and raise some money for their various causes and to clean up the community in the process,” said Dawson Creek City Councillor Duncan Malkinson.

The City has been offering a $200 honourarium for anyone’s community group for every route that is cleaned up.

He said the City’s community services department draws up the routes and are then handed out to whoever volunteers to extricate the rubbish that is found on their assigned route.

“It’s a beautiful event actually, because it’s a unifying force within the community,” he said.

“Because of the kind of winters we get up in the North here, it tends to leave behind some unsightly conditions on the city in the spring.”

Malkinson said the visual effect on the city is immediate and it takes cares of the, “many garbage complaints we get during this time of year.”

Out on the street, Clarise Handfield and her daughter Cassidy were out on 116th avenue just east of 8th street picking up garbage along with many other enlistees.

“This is all for the community,” said Handfield. “We’ll be out here for at least a couple of hours because we’ve been assigned this whole road.”
