Montessori story

School District 59’s (SD59) approved a Chetwynd school switching over the Montessori system.

“I think that is excellent,” said Sylvia Bell, principal of Don Titus Elementary.

“I’m glad that the board has shown courage and vision in allowing us to proceed with this (Montessori system).”

The SD59 board gave final approval to Bell at Wednesday’s SD59 meeting in Dawson Creek and Don Titus will be officially a Montessori school in September 2014.

Bell had applied for the Montessori system at the May 22 SD 59 board meeting in Tumbler Ridge.

The board had given preliminary approval to Bell at that time to proceed with exploring her options with the Montessori system.

Kathy Sawchuck, SD59 superintendent, said that the school can expect “Montessori-type practices throughout the year until next year.”

“Next year will be a transitioning year for Don Titus into the Monstessori system,” said Sawchuck.

ENERGY SAVINGS

Secretary Treasurer for SD59 Gerry Slykhuis announced that the district has and will see a 65 per cent decrease in electrical energy expenses from 2011 to 2016.

“We embarked a year and a half ago on an energy program specifically aimed at electrical savings,” he said.

SCHOOL BUS CHANGES

Slykhuis announced proposed changes to several school bus runs in the region.

The board is aiming for implementation of those changes in September of this year.

Five school bus runs facing elimination will affect Fellers Heights, Tate Creek, and Route 49 – which includes Alberta students.

Slykhauis said these increases in ridership times are due to the province’s decision to slash the transportation budget for the district by $750,000 over three years.

OUTGOING SUPERINTENDeNT

Assistant Superintendent Rob Dennis was given a show of appreciation by board chair Richard Powell for his 12 years as a board member with the SD59.

“You’ll be missed by the sisterhood,” said Powell.

“Thank-you for a great 12 year career,” said Dennis.

Dennis has been in the district for 25 years in various positions in the organization.
