It starts with people getting weaker, then they begin to lose their ability to speak and to swallow. Despite being one of the most common neuromuscular diseases worldwide there is no cure for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also called Lou Gehrig’s disease.

“My uncle always had a positive attitude even through his journey with ALS. He never let things get him down,” said Shayna Rolston. Russ Rolston succumbed to the disease in 2007.

“His ALS started with loss of his speech which with time became hard for him to communicate with family. He was given a talking machine to help him and always gave us a thumbs up to let us know he was ok.”

She said it was very hard for family and friends to see him go from a very active man (involved with sports such as swimming and lacrosse) to someone who became so weak.

“Over time he lost his speech, couldn’t eat (from liquid diet to a feeding tube), lost weight, arms and hands became paralyzed, muscle weakness, and at the end lost the use of his legs and passed away,” she said.

“It was so upsetting for me and other close family members to watch this and was so hard to understand why someone so active and young was diagnosed with this out of nowhere.”

The blue cornflower is a symbol of the disease. Rolston has organized a Flower Day in Dawson Creek on June 8 to raise funds against ALS, a prelude to the Dawson Creek Walk For ALS on September 7. There is also an ALS ‘No White Flags’ Cycle of Hope scheduled for June 22.

Up to 3,000 Canadians are currently living with the disease, but once diagnosed most patients only survive for two to five years. Only 10 per cent of those affected may live past 10 years or longer, according to the ALS Society.
