Fort St. John fed upon green eggs and ham this weekend.

That healthy dose of Dr. Seuss’ world of absurdity came in the form of a musical put on by the kids from Bert Bowes Middle School at the North Peace Cultural Centre.

According to director of the play, Irene Hayward, this is the first musical performed by the school in more than 20 years.

She said “Seussical Jr.” was chosen for the performance because it was, “the funnest, most craziest musical we could find.” It is adapted from the writings of Dr. Seuss.

Hayward discovered the musical via the internet and put together a team of volunteers to adapt the musical for their purposes so the kids could perform it.

“It’s fun, it’s crazy and the cast and staff just has a tonne of fun putting it on,” said Hayward.

The cast have been practicing the play since November.

School Principal Wade Hart was on hand Saturday to present the kids to the audience, which numbered more than a hundred, for the 2 p.m. performance.

Jessica Singer handled the choreography of the kids’ Seussical Jr., Rheanna Morris, Gwen Koop, Tanya Braun handled the musical guidance, and Joe Brooks handled the props.

The two-hour long performance was split in two by a short intermission and was well-received by the audience who clapped boisterously several times throughout the play.

The song “I do not like green eggs and ham” elicited the loudest response from the audience.

Mateo Hunter, the boy who played the main part of “The Cat in the Hat,” said it was hard work and he did his best to, “pull through.”

“It (playing the part) didn’t come very easily,” said Hunter, who added that it was worth it once he got up on stage.

“It actually feels pretty good. There’s nothing like it.”

He said he wants to pursue a life of musical theatre and study it in college.

Jocelyn Tremain, who played “Jo-jo”, said her character is a boy.

“It was difficult at first (playing a boy’s part) because I was like, I wanna be a girl! But whatever, it was fun. It was fun.”

Tremain said that she also wants to pursue a life of music because she wants to be a singer when she gets older.

She added, “It’s been a dream for a while now.”
