MLA-elect Mike Bernier has been appointed Chair of the Standing Committee for Aboriginal Affairs.

“It’s quite exciting,” he said in a phone call on Saturday from Victoria. “It’s very flattering to be asked to be chair and I’m looking forward to just hitting the ground running.”

Bernier said he would be officially sworn in as MLA at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.

“It’s been a crazy day or two,” he said in amazement.

He said he’ll be given his “marching orders” for his new appointment after he is officially sworn in.

“For confidentiality reasons I cannot give any real details until then,” he said.

He added that he’ll be brushing up on the legislative regulations and rules for the appointment once he gets his office in Dawson Creek set up.

Chief Roland Willson from Moberly Lake welcomes the appointment.

“I think he’ll do all right,” he said.

“I don’t know how much he knows about aboriginal relations but I look forward to working with him. He’s willing to talk and willing to listen, which is a big part of it.”

He knows Bernier from his time on City Council.

“The diversity is huge across B.C. from East to West, from North to South, and the concerns are all different,” he said.

“It’ll be challenging but I think he’s up for the job.”

“One of the things the premier announced from the beginning on why the Liberals did so well was that there were so many star candidates all around the province,” he said.

“I was excited for her because they were all great candidates.”

Bernier said he was pleased about Liberal MLA Pat Pimm’s appointment to Minister of Agriculture – his northern MLA counterpart in Fort St. John.

“That’s great for Pat, and great for the region as well,” he said.

“We are the agricultural hub for the entire province when you look at the activity in the area. I think its great to have the agriculture minister right here in the N.E. B.C.”

He added, “I’m really proud of Pat and I look forward to helping him in any way that I can.”
