The annual senior’s conference will be host to a celebrity as Dr. Art Hister will take the stage.

The doctor, famous for his “Health Headlines” segment on Global TV, will be attending the fourth annual Growing: The Senior Social Network conference in Dawson Creek this Saturday.

“He sounds like a very personable, down-to-earth and enjoyable person to listen to,” said Margaret Sutton, conference chair of the South Peace Senior’s Access Service Society (SPSASS).

Hister contacted The Dawson Creek Daily News to say that he is, “really looking forward to the conference.”

“I’ve never been up in that area and people up in that part of the province are so neat!” exclaimed Hister.

“I always get treated like royalty when I go to these events.”

Hister confirmed that he will be speaking at the conference about healthy living with specific topics that include strokes, osteoporosis, falling down, and gluten sensitivity.

As he is a senior himself, Sutton said she respects his knowledge.

“He’s a senior just like us and Global wouldn’t have hired him if he wasn’t knowledgeable,” she said.

A recent segment on March 30, for example, showed Hister discussing the ingestion of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) tablets and their health benefits.

The conference will be held this Saturday at the Senior Citizen’s Hall on McKellar Avenue and it’s scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m.

In addition to the speeches, there will be an information session about computer usage, a skit and at the end of the day there will be door prizes and a raffle draw for a quilt.

There will also be trade fair tables set up that will feature cancer information, palliative care, Red Cross, the Horticultural Society, Bergerons Funeral Home, Better at Home, and Victoria Mansion.

Sutton confirmed that Greg Wandling, a local entrepreneur and masseuse at In Touch Massage in Dawson Creek, will be the Master of Ceremonies (MC) for the event.

“He is really quite a comedian,” she said.

Wandling said he wanted to MC the event because he was approached by the society for the job and he wanted to do it for personal reasons.

“I’m getting up there too,” laughed Wandling.

“It’s a great information gathering session and I wanted to MC the event because I know my age group will be a senior someday.”

Wandling said his experience as being a Master of Ceremonies of many music events in and around the Dawson area makes him an ideal candidate for this event, which he said he’s looking forward to.

He said anyone who isn’t a senior shouldn’t feel like they can’t attend because the conference is for anyone who wants, “to stay independent and healthy.”

“Whether you’re the children of those seniors or the seniors themselves, that will be a great day for that,” he said.

“It’s (the conference) so successful that it just keeps running,” said Sutton.

She confirmed that they will be expecting 200 people to show for the conference, and at press time, 124 tickets have been sold.
