Christmas came early for the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation, which received a whopping $340,000 thanks to kids.

The mammoth amount was raised by kids who set up lemonade stands, donated their allowances and helped with local fund-raisers across Alberta.

“Over 100 kids contributed to this foundation,” said Jody Schwartz, communications officer for the ACHF.

“It doesn’t always have to be a big oil company that donates money; contributions can be made be from the most unlikely of sources.”

The presentation was made yesterday on the 4th floor of the Children’s Hospital in the Telus Theatre.

Schwartz said that the money will go a long way in funding a myriad of things at the Children’s Hospital, from research equipment and educational programs to life-saving medical equipment.

“I wanted to cut my ponytail off to help raise money so my family and I held a fund-raiser at my school in Vulcan,” said Perley.

“People from all over helped us raise $16,205 in different ways to see me cut it off.”

Perley donated the ponytail afterward to Locks of Love, a public non-profit organization that provides hair pieces to financially disadvantaged children suffering from long-term hair loss due to medical treatments.

She was inspired to act by five-year-old Grayson Mix, a friend of the family who has cancer.

“He means so much to me and I wanted to help him out.

“His awesome attitude despite his situation is such an inspiration to me and my family.”

Perley’s aptitude for giving didn’t stop with the fund-raiser.

“She wants to work for the Children’s Hospital one day and give back to the community.

“That way, I can really give back to the community,” she said.
