Jamaican Calgarians took just under 10 seconds to hit the roof, as one of their heroes hit the record books.

It was standing room only at the Winston Heights — Mountainview Community Centre Sunday, were hundreds of Jamaican ex-pats from in and around Calgary gathered to show their support for their favourite son, Usain Bolt, watching him smash the Olympic record in the 100-metre dash.

The fastest man in the world emerged as the clear winner in the Olympics’ marquee event, and as Bolt crossed the finish line the hall erupted.

“I knew he would win,” said Augustine Samuels, president of the Calgary Jamaican Canadian Association Alberta.

“I’m so elated.”

Elsie Lawson, decked out in a ball cap bearing Bolt’s name and a Jamaica shirt, loudly cheered the record-smashing victory.

“This is absolutely fabulous,” she said.

“He was the clear winner.”

Bolt catapulted into the Olympic record books with a lightning fast speed of 9.63 seconds, toppling his own Olympic record at the Bejing Olympics of 9.69 seconds, but short of his 2009 world championships world record of 9.58 seconds.

Even before the runners settled into the blocks, the atmosphere in the hall was electric.

“He is such a role model for our community,” said Samuels.

“He gives back to the Jamaican country by supporting local schools for children with disabilities.”

Samuels said he feels proud to be a part of Bolt’s legacy by acting as his voice in Calgary.

“We’re here to show our support for him and I feel very proud to be here. I promote him and his best intentions in every way that I can,” he said.

“I really feel like a Jamaican today.”

Samuels, who was born in a town called Savanna-la-Mir, Jamaica, moved to Calgary recently.

Lawson said had Bolt failed to live up to the heavy expectations, the hopes of an entire nation would have been crushed.

“We’d flood this place with tears,” she said.

“Usain means so much to me and my country — he has our country in the palm of his hand.”
